The Science Council looks to promote the professional application of science, recognising in particular the importance of technician and graduate level skills to the UK economy. This exciting new role arises following the Government launch of the Technician Council and a grant from the Gatsby Charitable Trust to the Science Council to support this major project.

The Registration Executive will be pivotal in supporting the development, launch and promotion of this project as well as contributing to the further success of the existing Chartered Scientist award - maintaining standards and increasing the effectiveness of Licensed Bodies.

The successful individual will be educated to degree level or equivalent; be a good communicator; have strong administrative and database skills; have experience of a setting where volunteers play a crucial role; and be comfortable working as part of a small, dedicated team. Additionally, you will appreciate science careers and professions, and have some marketing experience.

Launch of the Technician Council

 


Team Administrator

Salary: £20-£21,000 p.a.

 

The Science Council is still a young organisation but is continuing to expand with some exciting new ventures on the horizon.  It now wishes to recruit a Team Administrator to support these projects and to become the hub of the administration and the team’s daily life.

This role is pivotal: working closely with the CEO, the role will be the initial face and voice of The Science Council; will maintain and manage the office and its infrastructure services, including internal IT and web; will provide committee support and support in delivering innovative projects such as the BIS Science for Careers Expert Group; will maintain financial records; and help the team to achieve its targets.

There are few routine tasks so the successful candidate will need to be willing and helpful, with a flexible approach and attitude, and be able to take responsibility.  Additionally, there is a need for experience of bookkeeping and accounting systems; IT skills; good communication; and initiative.

Royal Meteorological Society

Interim Head of Communications

The Interim Head of Communications is a 12 month position providing maternity cover for the post holder.  It is an important role in the work of the Society.  It brings together all the outward facing communications activities under the responsibility of a single post.  The post holder works closely with the Head of IT and Technical Services, who is responsible for the Society’s Website, the Public Engagement Programme Manager and the Director of Weather and Climate.

All of the outward-facing communications activities are brought together under the responsibility of this post.  In particular this role manages and prepares all of the Society’s media briefing and consultation work, marketing and promotional material, and ensuring that the Society’s strategic objectives are shared and understood by its stakeholders.  This role also has responsibility for developing and managing the Society’s Corporate Responsibility Programme. 

This is a busy hands-on role that requires someone with excellent written and verbal communication skills, who has the ability to engage effectively with senior professionals and members of Government and can act as a public face for the Society.  The person we are looking for should be able to build strong working partnerships, think creatively and be prepared to take on responsibility for delivering strategically important communications and public engagement projects.  Previous media training, professional marketing qualifications and work on providing support to the policy process would be an advantage. 

The position is based at the Society’s Headquarters in Reading, although the job holder will be required to travel in the UK, particularly to London.  This is normally a full-time post, 37 hours per week, although the Society is willing to consider reduced-hours working with a minimum of 22.5 hours per week, and we actively support flexible working arrangements where practical. 

The post will be offered as a 12 month contract, beginning, subject to notice periods, in September/October 2010.  The salary for this position is £23,000 per annum.  A full Job Description and any further information about the Society are available on request.
