The third Big Bang: UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair took place in London in March 2011 and was attended by over 20,000 young people.

The Big Bang is a free, annual event led by Engineering UK and developed in partnership with over 70 organisations from business & industry, government and the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) community. Featuring the National Science and Engineering Competition, The Fair aims to excite, educate, stimulate and enthuse young people about opportunities in STEM. Inspiring them to follow careers in this rewarding field. The Big Bang 2012 will take place in Birmingham in March 2012.

The Science Council's collaborative activities

In addition to helping to shape the careers events at The Big Bang, the Science Council worked with member bodies and external organisations to create two themed areas and activities highlighting the value and integration of science in all areas of our lives. These can be downloaded below.

Global bedroom

A large depiction of a teenage bedroom with text boxes highlighting the hidden origins or values of every day objects. In addition we had a Seismic Simulator allowing visitors to view their own earthquakes and some colour pyschology demonstrations. Download and print the bedroom onto A3 and explore the subjects of each text box – and how we know about them. You can link to Future Morph to find out how we know.

  •  Download the Global bedroom (pdf 6.4MB)
  • Download the door hanger (pdf 641 KB) and print it on to card, cut round both sides and stick them together (or print it double sided – much greener), choose from the suggested green actions and its ready to hang on the door. (Top tip – if you laminate it or write in pencil you can change your choices)
  • Download the News Sheet (pdf 1.44MB)  print then copy the newssheet onto A3 paper (double-sided if possible) and then complete the activities. If you get stuck for ideas you can visit our member websites to explore the resources you need to carry on.

DNA Bracelets

Alongside a depiction of a modern kitchen with scientific discoveries hidden beneath certain objects we ran a dna bracelet making activity which was very popular.
