Royal Society of Edinburgh inquiry into barriers to women in STEM 

August 2011

The Science Council welcomes the opportunity to provide evidence on this important issue and commends the Royal Society of Edinburgh for establishing the Working Group. If gender balance in the science workforce is to be achieved, the STEM community must continue to ask themselves probing questions on how to attract and retain women. Science Council commissioned to help increase diversity in the scientific workforce

June 2012

The Science Council has been commissioned by the Royal Society forms part of a new Department for Business, Innovation and Skills-funded four year programme to investigate ways to remove barriers to entry and progression, including gender, ethnicity, disability and socio-economic status.

As part of this work the Science Council and Trends Business Research Limited (TBR) will undertake research exploring socio-economic status within the science workforce and examples of interventions which may facilitate the career progression of individuals.

The Royal Society’s programme is linked to a parallel project led by the Royal Academy of Engineering and will now provide an integrated diversity programme for the science, technology, engineering and maths workforce.
