The Science Council is developing new professional registers for scientists and technicians with the support of the Gatsby Charitable Foundation
The Science Council has announced the launch of two new registers alongside the Chartered Scientist award (CSci). From early 2012, the Registered Science Technician (RSciTech) and Registered Scientist (RSci) awards will be available initially through seven pilot licensed bodies, creating a framework of professional registration across the science workforce and recognising high standards of professionalism at all levels.
Professional registers confer recognition, status and transferability. Over 15,000 scientists have achieved CSci since its launch in 2004, and with the launch of RSciTech and RSci, many more stand to benefit. The Science Council licenses its member organisations to admit their individual members to the register through a process of peer assessment. Entry standards are based on a combination of knowledge and understanding, professional competence and commitment to professional ethics, conduct and CPD (continuing professional development). The standards for both new registers have been agreed and are available to download.
A new website with detailed guidance on the registers and how to apply will be launched in the spring; in the meantime, you can follow the links below or contact the Registrar, Ali Orr, to find out more.
The development of the new registers is being overseen by the New Registers Advisory Group which is composed of representatives of member bodies and chaired by Jon Poole.
To inform the development of the project the NRAG commissioned two research reports which have now been published.
The Science Council produces periodic stakeholder updates on the new registers project. The December 2011 update is now available to read. To receive future updates by email, please contact the Registration Executive, Will Ravis.
